Splice/Loop, 2014, 46’33”
Splice / Loop invites you on a (de)tour through the disintegrating world of analogue tape, and gets hands-on with how we used to make radio. Digital natives touch tape for the first time and old skool radiomakers splice it up like it’s 1993. Here’s technology from an era when cut meant cut; with a razor blade – and “undo” meant fishing slivers of tape out of the bin and wiping bits of lunch off them before sticking them back into your work. The tape and the machines are falling apart now, but we reflect on the pleasures of making radio by hand, sticking to a decision, and getting away from the screen, arriving at the question: how to make space for the creative accident in the digital domain? We also go behind the scenes with The Loop Orchestra, who teach us how and why imperfections might make the perfect loop…
