The machine for living in

The machine for living in, 1993, 33’11”

First broadcast Nov 1st, 1993, ABC Radio National.

Our days enmeshed in the fabric of the city, weave patterns in and out of our homes along telephone lines, through streets, down drains; threading order through disorder. The way we live in our most intimate space, our home, borders on the way we inhabit time. Through habits and routines, through the protracted moment of a daydream, we dwell.
The machine for living in is an apparatus for making order amongst chaos; the machine we use to inhabit our corner of the world. It’s moving parts include the functions of our days, the walls of our homes and the networks we are connected to. Sometimes it breaks in, but mostly its cogs drive our dwelling and dreams between.
